What is a database?

  • An electronic database is a comprehensive collection of information in electronic form and organized for quick retrieval via a computer.
  • Each library database has a specific focus - a particular topic or subject (like an enormous book on science)

How is a database different from the internet?

  • Authors get a fee for the content they contribute
  • We pay for access (MacKillop Senior College has paid for you) - the fee covers the cost of creating, organising and maintaining the collection of information
  • You get access to scanned books; full-text articles; images; videos ... information that is not available for free on the net

As each database is a different collection of information (like each book is different) you pick the one you think is best for your needs for this assignment.

What is an eBook?

  • Either, a digital copy of a printed book that you read off the screen
  • or, an electronic book (a long piece of writing, 20,000 words or so) that you read off the screen
